The 3rd Element: Community Wellbeing (DAY 25)

Today’s lesson is a continuation of Gallup’s research on Wellbeing, based on the book, Wellbeing at Work: How to Build Resilient and Thriving Teams. By studying the human behavior and wellbeing of more than 98% of the world’s population, and conducting over 100 million interviews, Gallup uncovered the five common elements that people need to THRIVE IN THEIR LIVES:

  1. Physical: You have energy to get things done

  2. Social: You have meaningful relationships in your life

  3. Community: You like where you live

  4. Financial: You manage your money well

  5. Career: You like what you do every day

Today’s lesson is a discussion of the third element: Community Wellbeing, in the context of our relationship with alcohol. Scroll down for the journal questions from the video.

According to Gallup,

“People with high Community Wellbeing like where they live! In Gallup’s initial studies, Community Wellbeing stood out as a differentiator between a good life and a great life! People “thriving” in community wellbeing say their life has exceeded their wildest expectations! Similar to how a company’s mission or purpose resonates with its most engaged employees, people get a great sense of fulfillment when they feel they are part of something bigger than themselves. Communities can give people that feeling.

People who are thriving in Community Wellbeing feel safe and secure where they live. They also feel like the place where they live fits the lifestyle they want. They take pride in their community, and they believe it’s headed in the right direction. Moreover, they give back to their community and make a meaningful contribution. Like the other four wellbeing elements, community wellbeing feeds, and is fed by, the other elements of wellbeing.”

JOURNAL PROMPTS:

  • Do you like where you live?

  • Are your drinking habits tied to any dissatisfaction in your living situation?

  • What community interests do you have? Remember that “community” can be where you live, affinity groups, religious or professional organizations (not just where your home is located)

  • Do you have a community of like-minded people to spend your time with?

ACTION PLANNING:

  • What is one community event you could get involved with?

  • Think about how you can contribute to your community based on your personal mission. What are you really passionate about?

  • Consider joining a community group or event

  • The Sober Club is an excellent on-line sobriety community group! www.thesoberclub.com

  • There are lots of additional options to consider on my "What's Next" page, if you're looking for ongoing support (in addition to the monthly Zooms I'm going to start hosting this year!)

Grab your journal and a cup of coffee — or a fun mocktail of your choice! Give some thought to the questions above. Feel free to reach out in the comments below or by email if you need some support on this exercise.
