DAY 1: Sample Lesson: Your “WHY” and Behavior Change

This is a SAMPLE LESSON and is the first lesson in the Alcohol-Free Challenge & 31-Day Course. It is based on the organizational behavior change method called “ADKAR.” If you’ve tried quitting drinking (or making any habit change) in the past and it didn’t stick, the video lesson helps explain why.

We’re using ADKAR as the behavior change model for this program, which involves the following 5 steps, which need to be performed sequentially and cumulatively to make the change stick. Each step builds upon the previous one, where:

  • A = AWARENESS of the need for change

  • D = DESIRE to change

  • K = KNOWLEDGE of how to change

  • A = ABILITY to demonstrate the skills and behaviors / the outcome of the change

  • R = REINFORCEMENT (positive emotion) to make the change stick

Watch the video and let me know if there are any questions! Your homework assignment is below the video.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT: Defining your “WHY.” Building on Step 2 of ADKAR: DESIRE - The Reason for Change.

  • What is your WHY? Why are you here?

  • Why are you doing this Alcohol-Free Challenge?

  • What outcome(s) do hope to achieve?

  • What does “success” look like for you?

  • Extra Credit: What emotion do you want to feel at the end of the challenge? Create your emotion-based goal so you know what you are reaching for in your relationship with alcohol.
